Walking routes surrounding Glen Loy Forest Lodge Below.

Local Events: (not all confirmed dates confirmed for 2007)

The West Highland Way is probably Scotland's most famous long-distance hiking trail stretching some 95 miles from just north of Glasgow to Fort William.

The Great Glen Way is a newer, interesting long-distance trail between Fort William and Inverness (approx. 70 miles) following the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness.

Walks from our front door

Glen Loy Wood (OS Grid Reference: NN 149 821 GB)

1. Glen Loy Wood - Erracht car park - Eastern Side

The Erracht Native Oakwood is at the bottom of the eastern slope stretching from the river Loy half way up the hill. An excellent place for wildlife watching and peace and quiet.

How to get there:
Take the B8004 from Banavie on the North side of the canal. There are three forest gates in the forest area. You are looking for the most Easterly gate with the Forestry Commission signs at the entrance with the words 'with Erracht access' on them.

Enter through:
Erracht car park

2. Glen Loy Wood - Western side

A small informal car park with enough space for 3 vehicles.

How to get there:
The entrance is found by crossing the river Loy and turning left at the Forestry Commission signs. The car park is situated just over the cattle grid on the right hand side.

This walk starts in the main forest and uses forest roads for the walk in to the Oakwood area. The roads are not well used and many wild animals are often spotted on your way in to the Oakwood. The walk then changes to paths as you leave the road head up in to the oak wood itself. This path has steep sections both above and below the forest road. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, buzzards, pine martin and many more woodland animals.

Habitats: We have information about Pinewood and Upland Oakwood

3. Glen Loy - The Great Glen Way

Interesting long-distance trail between Fort William and Inverness (approx. 70 miles) following the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness. You can join the path just three hundred yards from our front door.

4. Glen Loy Valley

Walk up the Glen Loy valley. Quiet and remote, about 4 miles of single lane tarmac road followed by a 12mile walk to Glenfinnan. Very easy to spot the red deer monarch, sleeping or feeding on the mountainsides.

5. Glen Loy - Coire Chnaith

Climb the highest peak in our immediate area. Height being 2 611.5 feet (796m) above sea level.
